Background:
Sarthak Rama is a student with 100% intellectual disability since birth. He studies at Zilla Parishad Primary School, Nagapurwadi. Due to his condition, he required assistance for basic activities, including using the toilet and bathroom. His parents accompanied him to school every day.
Challenge:
The school lacked clean and accessible sanitation facilities for children with disabilities. Sarthak depended on others for using the toilet, affecting his dignity, confidence, and comfort in school.
Intervention:
With support from Mashal NGO and Atos Prayas Foundation, the school was provided with safe, inclusive sanitation facilities. A specially designed commode-chair bathroom was constructed for children with disabilities.
Impact:
Sarthak can now use the bathroom independently and attends school with greater confidence. The facilities have improved his daily life and also benefited other children with disabilities.
Conclusion:
Accessible sanitation is essential for ensuring dignity, equality, and the right to education.
