The Stitch of Change: Sharmila’s Journey to Self-Reliance
Background
Sharmila, a 34-year-old woman, lives in a modest rented home in Shivaji Nagar, Dehuroad, with her husband, Nitin Gohar, and their three children: Karansingh (15), Prachi (11), and Thavannitsingh (8). For years, Sharmila’s world was defined by the strict traditions of the Walmiki community. According to these customs, women are expected to remain within the home and observe the ghoongat (veil), rarely interacting with the world outside or appearing before men without a parada.
The Turning Point
For nearly a decade, the family relied on Nitin’s marketing job, which provided a stable monthly income of ₹15,000. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought their stability to an abrupt halt. Nitin lost his job, and the family’s survival was suddenly at risk. To keep the household running, Nitin took up plumbing—a trade he never imagined he would enter—which brought their income down to a meager ₹8,000 per month.
Watching her husband struggle to meet their daily needs, Sharmila felt a deep urge to contribute. She needed a way to earn respected her community’s traditions while allowing her to remain present for her children.
Empowerment Through Skill
When Sharmila learned about the Sadhana Basic Tailoring Course through a program coordinator, she saw a glimmer of hope. She enrolled in the Livelihood SkilGroup 19, Grouped objectl Development Training Program, marking a significant step toward her independence.
Through the program, Sharmila mastered the art of stitching essential garments, including:
- Children’s frocks and body petticoats
- Sari petticoats and blouses
- Salwar kurtas
Initially, the training allowed her to save the money the family previously spent on tailoring services. However, her ambition quickly grew. She is now determined to transition from basic stitching to professional tailoring, aiming to turn her new craft into a sustainable business.
The Impact: Beyond the Needle
